ALEXANDRIA PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION SCHEDULES
NOVEMBER 16 PUBLIC HEARING ON WITTER PROPERTY
Athletic Fields Among Possible Future Uses For 13.7-Acre Railroad Parcel

The City of Alexandria’s Park and Recreation Commission will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 16, to discuss proposed athletic fields and other potential uses for the Witter property, a 13.7-acre site located west of Telegraph Road between Duke Street and the railroad and Metrorail rights-of-way.

The public hearing will be held at the Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center, 1605 Cameron St., in the City’s Upper King Street area.

Currently owned by CSX Railroad, the Witter property has been identified for acquisition by the City of Alexandria with Federal funds received in conjunction with the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project. The City and CSX have reached agreement in principle on the terms of the purchase.

Following the conclusion of discussion and comments on the Witter property, the commission will hear comments from residents on any park- and recreation-related issue. This procedure, a departure from previous practice, is a new norm for the commission.

As part of its ongoing effort to provide additional opportunities for residents to provide input on park and recreation issues, the commission will continue to schedule future public hearings and regular monthly meetings at various locations throughout the City.

Persons who are unable to attend the public hearing can send written comments to the Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission within two weeks of the hearing date in care of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria, VA 22314.

The Durant Memorial Center is a short walk from the King Street Metro Station and is also served by DASH transit lines #2, #5, and #6. For route and schedule information, call 703-370-DASH.

The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. For more information on the hearing, or to request a reasonable accommodation or to receive materials in an alternative format, please contact Roger Blakeley, Deputy Director of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, at 703-838-4343, TTY 703-838-4902.
