Alexandria Police Identify Homicide Victim

Alexandria police have identified the victim of last night’s fatal shooting in Del Ray as Bethlehem Ayele, a 34-year-old Alexandria woman. On Wednesday, around 10:15 p.m., police responded to the intersection of Mount Vernon and Commonwealth Avenues for the report of gunfire. Officers found the victim in a car suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to Inova Alexandria Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Initial investigation indicates that Ayele was driving a car north on Commonwealth Avenue. While she was stopped at the light at Mount Vernon Avenue, an unknown suspect approached the car and shot her. The car traveled across the intersection before striking a utility pole on the northeast corner of the intersection. No one else was in the car when police arrived.

While a motive for the shooting has not been established, detectives believe the victim may have been targeted. The suspect is only described as a black male.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Section of the Alexandria Police Department at 703-838-4444 or 703-838-4711.
