Alexandria Police Investigate Fatal Shooting
Alexandria police are investigating the apparent homicide of a woman last night in Del Ray. On Wednesday, around 10:15 p.m., police responded to the intersection of Mount Vernon and Commonwealth Avenues for the report of gunfire. Officers found the adult victim in a car suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to Inova Alexandria Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Initial investigation indicates that the victim was driving a car north on Commonwealth Avenue. While she was stopped at the light at Mount Vernon Avenue, an unknown suspect approached the car and shot her. The car traveled across the intersection before striking a utility pole on the northeast corner of the intersection. No one else was in the car when police arrived.
The victim’s identity has not yet been confirmed and there is no description of the suspect at this time. A motive for the shooting has not been established.
