TO PRESENT 2006 “ALEX” AWARDS
AT OCTOBER 20 CELEBRATION
Awards Recognize Outstanding Contributions to Alexandria’s Cultural Life

The Alexandria Commission for the Arts will present its 2006 “Alex” Awards at a festive celebration at the Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center next Friday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. The awards recognize individuals and organizations for their exceptional contributions to Alexandria’s cultural life.

The “Alex” Awards are presented in up to four categories: Artistic Discipline, Service to the Arts, Outstanding Contributions to Arts Education, and Innovative Partnerships Between Business and the Arts.

Chip Brienza, on-air personality at Washington’s Classical Station WGMS 104.1, will serve as master of ceremonies. “We are very fortunate to have Chip Brienza join us to recognize our outstanding awardees,” said commission Chair Pat Miller. “This will be a wonderful evening and I encourage Alexandria’s many arts patrons to join us in showing our appreciation to the awardees.”

Following are the nine “Alex” Awards nominees for 2006:
Sylvia Alimena, Music Director, Eclipse Chamber Orchestra
Suzanne Brock, Arts Patron
Erin Jacobs, Jefferson-Houston School for Arts and Academics
Gwen Harrison Lockhart, Arts Patron
Melissa Long, Jefferson-Houston School for Arts and Academics
Martha Peterson of Jefferson-Houston School for Arts and Academics
Marie Schuler of Comcast Communications
T. C. Williams High School Visual Arts Department
(Dr. Patty Lewis, Leslie Rouseau, and Holly Langfeld)
Laura Wollman of William Ramsay Elementary School

Each winner will receive a uniquely framed piece of art created by Matthew Harwood or a sculpture created by Jennifer Hartfield, and a brass star draped on a blue ribbon created by David M. Martin of Gold Works.

A champagne and dessert reception will follow the program. Admission is $25 per person and $40 per couple. Sponsorships are also available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased online at www.alexandriacommissionforthearts.org.
