Alexandria Enlists Volunteers
For October 14 Virginia Waterways Cleanup
Participants Will Clean Hunting Creek in Alexandria

Volunteers are needed to participate in the 2006 Virginia Waterways Cleanup and help clean Hunting Creek in Alexandria. The cleanup will take place from 9 am to noon on Saturday, Oct. 14. Participants will meet at the end of South Royal Street and Jones Point Drive. The event will be held rain or shine.

Trash bags and gloves will be provided and waterproof boots are recommended.

“The Waterways Cleanup provides school, youth, scout and other community groups with an excellent opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to preserving Alexandria’s natural beauty, said Richard Baier, Director of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services. “Many groups and individuals also are able to fulfill community service program requirements through these cleanup efforts.”

Hundreds of tons of trash end up in the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay every year from local watersheds. Litter is harmful to water resources and wildlife as well as an eyesore that impairs the beauty of a community.

The 2006 Virginia Waterways Cleanup is sponsored by Clean Virginia Waterways, a nonprofit organization dedicated to citizen stewardship of Virginia’s water resources, and is part of the International Coastal Cleanup.

Staff from the City’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services will be leading a cleanup effort that covers the shoreline of Jones Point Park near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

For more information and to register for the cleanup, call Diana Handy of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, Division of Environmental Quality, at 703-519-3400, extension 166, or e-mail diana.handy@alexandriava.gov.
