Alexandria Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Accident

Alexandria police are investigating an accident that killed an elderly pedestrian early this evening. At 4:35 p.m., an 82-year-old Alexandria woman was crossing the 4600 block of Duke Street when she was struck by a vehicle.

Initial investigation indicates that the victim was walking south across Duke Street and was in a westbound lane, when she was hit by a 2000 Toyota Camry. The victim was not in a crosswalk, and the driver, a 49-year-old Alexandria woman, remained on the scene. No charges have been placed at this time.

The victim, who has been identified as Mildred Wheeler, was flown by helicopter to Inova Fairfax Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Members of the Crash Reconstruction Team are investigating this case and have closed some lanes of traffic on Duke Street. Traffic delays are significant and motorists are urged to avoid the area.

This is the first traffic fatality in the City this year.
