CITY OF ALEXANDRIA CELEBRATES
5TH ANNUAL CAMBODIAN COMMUNITY DAY FESTIVAL

The City of Alexandria’s 5th annual Cambodian Community Day Festival is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 27, from 11 am to 6 pm, at Ben Brenman Park, 5000 Duke St. Admission is free and the festival will be held rain or shine.

“The Annual Festival provides the residents of Alexandria with the opportunity to experience traditional Cambodian culture,” said Boran Tum, Cambodian Community Day Committee Chair. “The 2006 festival theme is Nourish & Integrate the Cambodian Culture in Alexandria.”

The entertainment’s highlights will include the Cambodian Classical Dance Troupe from the Cambodian Buddhist Temple in Silver Spring, Md. The troupe will perform the Robam Bopha Lokei (Flower of the World Dance), Robam Santipheap Vapathor Rong Rroeung (Peace and Flourishing Culture Dance), and the Robam Svar (Monkey Dance).

The festival will also feature traditional children games, such as Teanh Prot (Tuk-of-War) and Choul Chhuong (Toss of Handkerchief Ball), and exhibits showcasing traditional arts, crafts, paintings and souvenirs. Cambodian food and beverages will be available for purchase.

The City’s Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities and the Cambodian Community Day Committee are cosponsoring the festival.
