One of Two Double Shooting Victims Dies;
Case Now Classified as a Homicide

One victim of a double shooting in Del Ray has died. Al-Rahn Powell, a 19-year-old Maryland resident, was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. today at the Washington Hospital Center. The case has now been reclassified as a homicide, the third murder in Alexandria this year.

The incident occurred on Saturday, July 29, in the 1300 block of Mount Vernon Avenue. In the days following the shooting, detectives arrested a 14-year-old male and a 16-year-old male, both of Fairfax County. Both are being held in the Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center awaiting trial.

The second victim, an 18-year-old Alexandria man, continues to recover from his injuries.

Initial investigation indicates that the suspect and the victims, who knew one another, got into an altercation that escalated into a shooting.
