Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police to Honor Alexandria Officers;
Annual State-Wide Awards Recognize Bravery
Four Alexandria police officers will be among those honored next week by the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police (VACP). The VACP will present each with the Award of Valor at a dinner banquet in Roanoke on Tuesday, August 8. Fifteen other officers from across the state will also be recognized for their bravery, including one from Fairfax County and five from Prince William County police departments.
Alexandria officers Martin A. Hoffmaster, Patrick M. Lennon, Anton D. Keith and Terri D. Mucci will be recognized for their courageous actions during a carjacking case that occurred on January 11, 2005. This incident tragically ended near the Pentagon with the line-of-duty death of Officer James M. Feltis, a Pentagon police officer, who was struck and killed by the suspect as he tried to escape in the stolen car. The officers showed great bravery, putting themselves in imminent danger as they fought with the suspect, who had forcibly removed one of the officer’s weapons and began shooting. The gun was secured and the suspect was taken into custody. He later pleaded guilty in federal court to second-degree murder and is scheduled to be sentenced on September 19.
The awards, presented at the annual VACP conference, recognizes law enforcement officers who, in the line of duty, perform acts of extraordinary heroism while engaged with an adversary putting the officers at imminent personal risk.
