Planetizen Names Alexandria’s Planning and Zoning Web Site
As One of the 10 Best Planning, Design, and Development Web Sites for 2006

Planetizen, an Internet public-interest information exchange network for the urban planning, design, and development community, has named the City of Alexandria’s Planning and Zoning Web site, www.alexandriava.gov/planningandzoning, as one of the 10 best planning, design, and development Web sites for 2006. Planetizen’s list recognizes the 10 best new and substantially improved sites for the year. Readers and staff of Planetizen nominated Web sites that were judged against a common set of criteria, such as standards of Web accessibility.

“Planetizen’s recognition of the Planning and Zoning Web site as one of the 10 best lets us know we are doing an exceptional job,” said Eileen Fogarty, Director of the Department of Planning and Zoning. “We take care in providing the same high-quality service to our online customers that we provide to our in-person customers. We try to ensure they get the information they seek.”

Planetizen honored the Planning and Zoning Web site for standing out among other city planning department Web sites throughout the country with the range of information and tools it provides. Features of the Web site include Planning Commission Webcasts, an e-mail newsletter, detailed profiles of planning initiatives (including recent documents), a fully-featured GIS system, a guide for small business, an informative section on historic preservation, a complete set of applications and forms, and links to the city charter, zoning code, and zoning digest.

Planetizen serves as a one-stop source for urban planning news, commentary, interviews, event coverage, book reviews, announcements, job and consultant listings, training, and more. Planetizen is read by a diverse array of people who are interested in the built and natural environments and the interaction of environments.

Planetizen’s audience includes professional urban planners, developers, architects, policy makers, educators, economists, civic enthusiasts, and others from across the United States and around the world.
