CITY COUNCIL APPROVES WEEKEND PEDESTRIAN PLAZA TRIAL PROGRAM
FOR LOWER KING STREET

The 100 Block of King Street, between Union and Lee Streets, will become a festive pedestrian plaza for four weekends this summer under a trial program approved by the Alexandria City Council at its Tuesday meeting.

“Old Town Alexandria is one of the most attractive and vibrant destinations in the entire region,” said Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille. “Setting lower King Street aside as a place for people to stroll, shop and dine free of car and truck traffic will make all of Old Town even more enjoyable and successful.”

Under the trial program, the 100 block of King Street will be closed to all vehicles from 3:00 p.m. on Friday through Sunday evening on four successive weekends, beginning June 23-25. The trial will be extended for up to two additional weekends in the event of inclement weather on any of the planned trial weekends.

Following completion of the trial program, the City will assess the trial’s effectiveness in conjunction with surrounding residents and the business community and report its findings to the Mayor and City Council this fall.

“We have wanted to try this for a long time and I’m happy we’re finally going ahead with it,” said Mayor Euille. “It’s the right thing to do.”
