Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission Hosts Two Public Presentations
Presentations on Synthetic Infill Turf Athletic Fields and City’s Draft Athletic Field
Master Plan with Public Hearing and Regular Meeting to Follow

The Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission will host two public presentations on Thursday, June 15, starting at 6:30 pm at the George Washington Middle School’s auditorium, 1005 Mt. Vernon Ave. The first presentation concerns synthetic infill turf athletic fields. It will be followed by a presentation of information that was gathered by a consultant on the City of Alexandria’s draft Athletic Field Master Plan that is currently underway.

Following the two presentations, the Park and Recreation Commission will hold a public hearing on athletic field issues that are related to the City’s draft Athletic Field Master Plan. The commission’s regular meeting will follow the public hearing. All interested residents are invited to attend the presentations, public hearing, and commission meeting.

The synthetic field presentation will provide information on the installation and maintenance of synthetic infill turf athletic surfaces. Featured speakers include James Brosnan, a Ph.D. candidate at Penn State University who is recognized for his expertise in synthetic infill turf systems, and Robin Leonard of the Arlington County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, Sports Division, who will discuss Arlington’s experience with synthetic infill turf athletic fields.

The public hearing will gather public input on the draft Athletic Field Master Plan that is currently under development. The plan addresses programming, maintenance standards, field needs, and proposed solutions to improve field conditions on the City’s athletic fields.

Persons who are unable to attend the public hearing can send written comments for the Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission to the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria, VA 22314.

For more information, call Roger Blakeley, Deputy Director of the City’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, at 703.838.4842.
