City of Alexandria Acquires Additional Key Waterfront Property

At its Tuesday night, May 9 meeting, the Alexandria City Council ratified the contract between the City and the current owners of a high priority parcel on the City’s open space priority acquisition list. City Council authorized the purchase of 210 Strand Street, which is a waterfront property on the Potomac River. The parcel is now occupied by a storage building, boat dock and ramp. The City financed the $1.0 million acquisition cost with funds derived from City Council’s dedication of one-cent of the City’s real estate tax rate for open space acquisition. “This land acquisition helps the City take another step forward in fulfilling its open space plan,” said Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille.

Earlier this year the City acquired two other waterfront parcels (0 Prince Street and 200 Strand Street) in the same block as the 210 Strand Street property. The public planning process to develop specific plans for the waterfront area between Duke Street and the City’s Marina will commence this fall.
