City of Alexandria Recycles Election Signs Last fall, the Alexandria City Council supported a citywide collection of the Nov. 8 election signs for recycling. The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) gathered signs that were placed in public rights-of-way over a two-day period to recover the paper and metal sign components for recycling. The City successfully collected 2,600 signs, recycling 650 pounds of paper and 1,300 pounds of metal. The paper material was recycled at Capital Fiber in Springfield and the metal sign posts at Davis Metal in Lorton. Now that the Spring 2006 elections are complete, T&ES is coordinating the election sign recycling effort to duplicate or exceed the fall campaign’s success. The City encourages campaign volunteers to bring signs to the City’s recycling center, 3600 Wheeler Ave., Monday through Friday, between 7:00 am and 3:30 pm. The Solid Waste Division has stationed a blue dumpster with campaign signs on it, so that signs and metal stands can be deposited. There is no need to separate the items. If election signs cannot be delivered to the recycling center, the City requests that they be left on medians for collection. The T&ES Streets and Maintenance Division will collect the signs and deliver them to the recycling center for processing. All election signs must be removed no later than June 1.
