City of Alexandria Seeks Volunteers
For America’s 400th Anniversary 2006 Godspeed Sail

The City of Alexandria seeks volunteers to assist with America's 400th Anniversary 2006 Godspeed Sail from Saturday, May 27, through Saturday, June 3, in historic Old Town Alexandria. The event commemorates the 400th anniversary of the establishment of Jamestown, Va. as America’s first permanent English settlement in 1607. The City needs volunteers to assist with various aspects of the event, such as pedestrian safety and the staffing of information and exhibit booths. The 2006 Godspeed Sail is one of ten signature events and hundreds of other community projects recognizing America's 400th anniversary.

Volunteers will work in two hour shifts from 10:30 am - 7:30 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; and 10:30 am - 8:30 pm on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Memorial Day. The City will hold an orientation for volunteers on Wednesday, May 17, from 7 - 8:30 pm at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, 105 N. Union St. Refreshments will be served.

The 2006 Godspeed Sail event is free and open to the public from 11 am - 7 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and 11 am - 8 pm on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Memorial Day. Activities will include the Landing Party Festival, which consists of crafts for youth, interactive displays, and performances. Tours will be available for the replica of The Godspeed.

The Godspeed was one of three ships that brought America’s first permanent English settlers to Virginia in 1607.
