City of Alexandria Holds 8th Annual Bike-to-Work Day Commuters Ride to City Hall on Their Morning Commute to Work The City of Alexandria will hold its 8th Annual Bike-to-Work Day on Friday, May 19, from 7 to 9 am in front of City Hall, 301 King St. During the event, dozens of bicycle commuters will ride to City Hall on their morning commute to work. Food, prizes, and a Bike-to-Work Day T-shirt will be available for participants. In addition, participants will have a chance to win a new bike and bike accessories if they register online at www.waba.org by Friday, May 12. Bike-to-Work Day is held in May in celebration of National Bike Month. During Alexandria’s 8th Annual Bike-to-Work Day, the City and its partners will provide participants with information on bicycle and transit commuting and coordinate an on-site bicycle tune-up station. Alexandria organized the first Bike-to-Work Day in the Northern Virginia region in 1999. Since then, 20 additional event sites have been added throughout the region to support this growing event, which is coordinated through the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. Commuters who travel by bicycle employ a clean, quiet, and efficient mode of transportation while saving on the fuel, maintenance, insurance, and parking costs of driving to work. Bicycle commuting benefits both the individual and the community because it incorporates active living into one’s daily routines and does not contribute to traffic congestion, stress, or the parking demand. This year’s sponsors include the City of Alexandria; BikeWalk Alexandria; Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; Washington Area Bicyclist Association; Whole Foods Market; St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub; REI outdoor gear and clothing retail store; Wheel Nuts Bike Shop; Great Harvest Bread Company; Zipcar carsharing service; and City Bikes bicycle shop. For more information on Alexandria’s 8th Annual Bike-to-Work Day, call Yon Lambert, the City’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Coordinator, at 703.838.4966, extension 183, or visit www.alexride.org. # # # |
