Inc. Magazine Selects the City of Alexandria
For Its 2006 Hot Cities List

Inc. Magazine has selected the City of Alexandria for its 2006 Hot Cities list. The May issue of the magazine recognizes Alexandria and other cities across the U.S. as one of the nation’s hottest places to do business. The list, which was compiled by Michael A. Shires, a professor of public policy at Pepperdine University, focuses on job growth in the selected areas. Job growth is probably the best measure of a region’s economic vitality, especially as it applies to entrepreneurs.

According to the magazine, the Small Business Administration estimates that small companies generate as much as three-quarters of the nation’s new jobs. A region that shows strong job creation will likely be a hotbed for entrepreneurial activity. The strong job growth suggests the region’s economy is expanding, which means new demand and new opportunities.

The magazine grouped the City with Arlington County, and Washington, DC, and ranked the area in eighth place among large markets with 450,000 or more employees. The federal government’s expansion serves as a huge economic force that provides jobs at federal agencies and at private companies that do business with the federal government.

The magazine ranked the Northern Virginia region in seventh place among large markets, and recognized the region for its hot information technology and business services, biotechnology, engineering, and telecommunications. Public schools and cultural amenities make the area an appealing place to live.
