Alexandria Early Childhood Commission Offers Funding for Mini-Grants
Commission Seeks to Improve Education and Services
For At-Risk Children from Birth to 5 Years Old

The Alexandria Early Childhood Commission is offering funding for mini-grants to improve the quality of education and services in programs that serve at-risk children from birth through 5 years old. Since the commission encourages childcare centers to seek accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children, non-accredited centers can only request mini-grant funds to seek accreditation. Accredited childcare centers and other non-center programs can use the mini-grant funds for training staff, enhancing parent involvement, improving access to support services, or improving the supply or quality of materials and equipment in a program.

Funding is available for fiscal year 2007, which begins July 1, 2006, and ends June 30, 2007. Awards will be announced on or before June 30, 2006.

Mini-grant proposal applications must be submitted to the Alexandria Department of Human Services, Office for Early Childhood Development, 2525 Mt. Vernon Ave., Alexandria, VA 22301, no later than 5 pm on Wednesday, May 3. Applications can be downloaded at alexandriava.gov/dhs/center_minigrant.pdf or alexandriava.gov/dhs/application_fy2007.doc.

For more information, call Wendy Morris of the City’s Office for Early Childhood Development at 703.838.0875.
