Alexandria’s Project Discovery Holds
Second Annual Spring Swang
Proceeds will Benefit Project Discovery-Alexandria
And T. C. Williams Jazz Ensemble

The City of Alexandria’s Project Discovery Program will hold its second annual Spring Swang –an evening of jazz music and dancing– from 8 to 11 pm on Saturday, April 29. The event will take place at the James K. Polk Elementary School, 5000 Polk Ave. The award-winning T. C. Williams Jazz Ensemble will perform. Proceeds from the event will benefit Project Discovery-Alexandria and the T. C. Williams Jazz Ensemble.

Vaughn Ambrose, chair of T. C. Williams High School’s music department and a Washington-area musician will lead the group. Tickets for the event are $5 for students, $10 for adults, $15 for couples, and $25 for a family of four. The prices include light refreshments.

Free basic dance lessons will be offered when the doors open at 7:15 pm for those who need to brush up on their dance steps or get a solid introduction to swing dancing. The evening will also feature a dance contest with prizes awarded for first, second, and third place winners.

Project Discovery is a college-access program for low-income and first-generation college-eligible students. The program is based at T. C. Williams High School and the Minnie Howard School. Through workshops and trips to college campuses, Project Discovery provides participants with vital information on how to set and achieve educational goals.

The T. C. Williams Jazz Ensemble is a learning ground for students who are interested in music. It has produced exceptional jazz musicians, including DC’s King of Swing, Tom Cunningham.

For more information on the Spring Swang or to purchase tickets, call Project Discover at the City’s Department of Human Services at 703.838.0915, or e-mail lesa.gilbert@alexandriava.gov.
