Alexandria Police Investigate Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting

Alexandria police are investigating an officer-involved shooting which left one man dead.

Early this morning a uniformed Alexandria police officer was working an off-duty security detail at the IHOP restaurant at 6254 Duke Street. Around 3:40 a.m., a restaurant employee alerted the officer to a party that had just left without paying their bill. The officer went out to the parking lot and observed the suspects in a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The officer attempted to stop them, but the vehicle continued moving toward him. Fearing for his safety, he shot at the vehicle. One of the occupants, a back seat passenger, was shot and fatally wounded. Aaron R. Brown, an 18-year-old Springfield resident, died at the scene. None of the other occupants nor the officer was injured.

Detectives are interviewing the other occupants and additional witnesses who were in the area. Police are conducting both a criminal investigation and an internal investigation. The officer, who joined the Alexandria Police Department in 1993, will be placed on routine administrative leave.
