Public Invited to Discuss Draft Four Mile Run Restoration Master Plan

The public is invited to attend two public hearings to discuss the Draft Four Mile Run Restoration Master Plan. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, March 9, at 7:30 pm at the Alexandria Planning Commission meeting; and the second meeting will take place on Saturday, March 18, at 9:30 am at the City Council’s public hearing. Both meetings will be held at City Hall, 301 King St., City Council Chambers, on the second floor.

After an extensive public process, the Alexandria City Council and Planning Commission, and the Arlington County Board and Planning Commission will consider the Four Mile Run Restoration Master Plan. The project, which is based on the approved Master Plan, would transform the lower portion of the stream – a 2.3 mile hardened channel that was built in the 1970s to control flooding– into a model of urban ecological restoration.

The Master Plan focuses on the waterway between Interstate 395 to its mouth near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The restoration will maintain the run’s flood control function and establish an environment where communities in the City of Alexandria and Arlington County can gather, recreate, and celebrate a shared watershed legacy. The benefits of restoration include an enhancement of aquatic and riparian habitats and the establishment of Four Mile Run as a focal point, reflecting its value as a community resource.

A combined effort of citizens and staff from the City of Alexandria, Arlington County, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, and Congressman James Moran's Office has been coordinating environmental restoration and urban planning focused on the channel portion of Four Mile Run.
