American Public Works Association Presents
Alexandria’s Transportation Department with Accreditation Status

The American Public Works Association (APWA) has presented the City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (TES) with accreditation status. APWA awarded accreditation to TES after the association recently completed a review of the City department’s policies, practices, and benchmarks with national standards.

“The accreditation of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services by the APWA is an honor that is highly welcomed and appreciated,” said Richard Baier, Director of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services. “The accreditation recognizes that the department seeks to administer and maintain professional standards in its practices and services.”

The American Public Works Association found that TES fully complied with 340 out of 360 practice areas, and substantially complied with the remaining 20 practices. The department did not receive any partial compliances and non-compliances. The association will use three of the department’s model practices, such as the City’s Traffic Calming Program, as examples for other jurisdictions.

APWA is a national, professional organization that serves its members by promoting professional excellence and public awareness through education, advocacy, and the exchange of knowledge. Accreditation by the APWA is voluntary and helps the association to objectively evaluate, verify, and recognize compliance with its recommended management practices.

The City of Alexandria becomes the third Virginia jurisdiction and only the 33rd public agency nationwide to be accredited by the association.

For more information on the accreditation, call Richard Baier, Director of the City’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, at 703.838.4966.
