Public Invited to Attend Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center
WNBA’s Court of Dreams Program Award Enhances Center

The public is invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, January 25, at 4pm, at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Avenue, to celebrate the facility’s enhancements, funded by a $25,000 award from The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

In October 2005, the WNBA awarded the City’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities $25,000 for facility enhancements and literacy opportunities as part of the WNBA’s Court of Dreams Program. The Program was established by the WNBA to help local communities renovate basketball courts and create spaces for youth literacy programs. Mr. Rodney Hunt of RSI Systems in McLean, Virginia, a 2005 Court of Dreams Program Grand Prize winner, designated the Mount Vernon Recreation Center to receive the award on his behalf. As a result of the designation, the award was used to paint the gymnasium and game room, and furnish a “cyber caf” with chairs, a computer station, and a popcorn machine.

Mayor William D. Euille, members of City Council, Washington Mystics owner Sheila Johnson, Mystics player Chasity Melvin, and Rodney Hunt are expected to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony, which will be followed by a short program.

For more information on the award, and recreational programs and services offered by the City, call William Chesley, Division Chief of Recreation Services, at 703.838.4345.
