City of Alexandria Holds Community Workshop on Monroe Avenue Bridge Project Community Liaison Team Meets to Discuss Construction-Related Issues The City of Alexandria will hold a community workshop to discuss issues related to the straightening of the Monroe Avenue Bridge. The workshop will be held at 7 pm on Wednesday, Jan. 11, in the cafeteria of the George Washington Middle School, 1005 Mount Vernon Ave. The issues that will be discussed are pedestrian access to the new bridge, and alternatives for accessing Route 1 to and from Monroe Avenue once the bridge is built. Prior to the workshop, the Monroe Avenue Bridge Community Liaison Team will hold its first meeting at 7 pm on Thursday, Jan. 5, at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Ave. During the meeting, liaison team members who are comprised of representatives from various neighborhood and business associations will discuss construction-related issues once the bridge-straightening project begins. The meeting is open to public. City Council approved the straightening of the Monroe Avenue Bridge in January 2003 as part of the Potomac Yard Development Plan. Since then, plans for construction have been finalized and a schedule for implementation has been developed. Construction of the Monroe Avenue Bridge is expected to begin this winter. For more information on the Monroe Avenue Bridge project, call Emily Baker, City Engineer, of the Alexandria Department of Transportation and Environmental Services at 703.838.4327. # # # |
