Whole Foods Market Donates $50,000
For New Playground in Alexandria
Whole Foods Market –the nation’s first certified organic grocer– has donated $50,000 towards developing and installing a new playground at the City of Alexandria’s Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center, 1108 Jefferson St. The project consists of a modular play structure for children, ages 5-12, with construction that incorporates the use of recycled materials. Completion of the playground is expected by the spring/summer of 2006. The City is undertaking the design process for the playground and will begin seeking public input on specific play equipment in February.

Whole Foods Market, which was founded in Austin, Texas, will open its newest location in Alexandria’s Old Town at 1700 Duke St., two blocks east of the King Street Metro Station, on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

“We are so pleased that Whole Foods recognized a need for a playground, and chose the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities as its recipient and partner in its goal of making contributions to the community,” said Kirk Kincannon, Director of the City’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities. “The children of the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center will have an additional opportunity to enjoy their leisure experiences.”

For more information on the new playground, call Laura Durham, the City’s Open Space Coordinator, at 703.838.4343.
