Alexandria City Council Proclaims November as America Recycles Month

The Alexandria City Council is proclaiming November as America Recycles Month.
America Recycles is an annual, national awareness event that promotes the social, environmental, and economic benefits of recycling and purchasing recycled products. The City will recognize the month by hosting a recycling contest for students and the Recycling Works! Expo.

Students of the Cora Kelly Elementary School and Samuel Tucker Elementary School are participating in the Recycle Right Challenge recycling contest. Students must recycle as much paper as possible and recycle the correct paper items. The winner will be determined by which school recycles the most paper per student, and will be awarded a small cash prize.

The City’s Office of Recycling will host the first Recycling Works! Expo at 8 am on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the Dr. Oswald Durant Center, 1605 Cameron St. The Expo will provide attendees with resources for establishing a recycling program at a business or multi-family property. The free event is sponsored by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, Alexandria Hotel Association, Eisenhower Partnership, King Street Metro Enterprise Team, Potomac West Business Association, and the West End Business Association.

The City of Alexandria recently expanded its curbside recycling program to accept more paper items. Since the expansion, residents have recycled 37 percent more than this time last year. Items such as office and computer paper and corrugated cardboard boxes can now be recycled curbside.
