Alexandria City Council to hold Public Hearing on Proposed Site for New Alexandria Police Department Facility The Alexandria City Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed site for the new Alexandria Police Department facility during its regular scheduled Public Hearing Meeting on Saturday, October 15, at 9:30 am. On June 22, 2004, City Council adopted a resolution that established a citizens Ad Hoc Task Force to review the two sites proposed for the new police facility, a city-owned property on Wheeler Avenue near Duke Street and the Winkler property on Beauregard Street. In November, 2004 the Ad Hoc Task Force presented a report to City Council with its recommendation supporting the Wheeler Avenue site as the preferred location. Further, the Ad Hoc Task Force recommended that the City conduct public meetings and conduct a comprehensive traffic study. Staff completed the comprehensive traffic report in May, 2005. Public meetings were conducted with the general public and surrounding community on May 31, 2005, and with the Eisenhower Partnership on June 22, 2005. In order to use the Wheeler Avenue site for a new police facility, the City proposes to relocate the maintenance operations of the departments of Transportation and Environmental Services and Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities from that location to a city-owned facility located at Roth Street and Business Center Drive by 2008. The City’s salt dome and neighborhood recycling center would also be moved from their Wheeler Avenue locations to an adjacent area. # # # |
