Alexandria Plans Fall Workshops on
Livable Communities and Smart Growth

The Alexandria City Council will hold a workshop on Livable Communities and Smart Growth on October 20, at 7:00 p.m., in the Auditorium of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) headquarters building, located at 600 Dulaney Street.

The workshop will focus on community planning and community involvement and will feature Ed McMahon, Senior Resident Fellow at the Urban Land Institute, and a national authority on sustainable development, land conservation, and urban design.

The City’s Planning and Zoning Department staff have taken the City Council’s Strategic Plan for Alexandria 2015 and developed four major planning themes that shape the City’s current planning initiatives, finished plans, and approved development applications: Transit Oriented Development, Creating and Preserving Neighborhoods, Strengthening our Main Streets, and Creating Urban Villages.

The workshop will provide participants an opportunity to learn more about the community benefits of planning for the City’s future, as well as the ways in which Alexandria can be a leader in planning for a livable city.

For more information on the October 20 workshop, call Eileen Fogarty, Director, Planning and Zoning, at 703.838.4666.

A second workshop on Walkable/Livable Communities is scheduled for November 14, at 7:00 p.m., in the Atrium of the PTO headquarters building and will feature Daniel Burden, Executive Director of Florida’s nonprofit Walkable Communities, Inc.

For more information on the November 14 workshop, call Rich Baier, Director, Transportation and Environmental Services, at 703.838.4966.
