City of Alexandria Begins Leaf Collection on Oct. 17

The City of Alexandria will begin picking up leaves from City neighborhoods beginning Monday, Oct. 17. Vacuum equipped trucks will collect leaves that have been raked to the curb through mid-December. Residents who are interested in participating in the leaf collection service must rake leaves into a pile in the curb line and pile leaves away from cars.

Piles of leaves, rather than leaves that are spread loosely along the curb line, allow City crews to move more quickly through the neighborhoods. Tree limbs, rocks, bricks, and other debris that might be mixed in with leaves should be removed. These materials can cause damage to the equipment and delay collection.

City neighborhoods have been placed in one of five service areas, each with designated collection days. Each area will be serviced at least five times throughout the collection program. Information about participation and service areas were mailed to residents in late September and is available online at the City’s web site, alexandriava.gov.
