City of Alexandria Selects Mike Herway
As New Director of Information Technology Services

The City of Alexandria has selected Mike Herway as the new Director of Information Technology Services (ITS). Herway previously served as the City’s Deputy Director of ITS before being promoted as the department’s director. As the ITS director, his responsibilities will include managing and directing the City’s information technology operations and formulating policies and procedures governing them; and representing the City on intergovernmental and inter-regional committees and developing policies and making IT decisions on those committees.

“I'm really excited about being selected as the City's ITS Director for a couple of reasons,” says Herway. “The first is I have the best staff I've ever had in 25 years of senior IT management in the federal and local governments. I'm really looking forward to accomplishing a lot of things with them in the near future. The second is this is one of the best work environments I've been in. The Council, the City Manager, and the Department Heads understand and are supportive of the critical IT initiatives.”

Herway came to Alexandria in March 2001 as the ITS Division Chief for Applications from Arlington County where he had been the County’s Chief Technology Officer from 1999 to 2001. While at Arlington, his duties included managing computer applications services, the information technology security program, database administration, operations, and telecommunications functions of the County’s Office of Technology and Information Services. He formulated the County’s information technology plan as well as its information technology policies and budget.

Prior to his position in Arlington, he worked with the federal government for 27 years, coming from the Veteran’s Administration where he served in a variety of positions including Deputy Assistant Secretary for Information Resource Management, Director of the Veterans Administration’s automation center, and Director of Administration for the Office of Memorial Affairs. Prior to that he served in similar capacities with the US Postal Service, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Department of Commerce.

Herway obtained a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Maryland and a masters of public administration from the University of Kansas. He is also a Vietnam-era veteran who served three and one-half years as Data Services Officer in the Navy for the Pacific Fleet. Herway and his wife Deborah have been married for 33 years and have three adult children.
