Alexandria Office of Human Rights Issues Determination
in Housing Discrimination Case

Last night, after a special meeting, the Human Rights Commission announced its determination, in favor of the complainant in a housing discrimination case filed against Long & Foster Real Estate. The Commission found that the complainant in Cummings v. Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc. had been discriminated against when he attempted to buy a home in Alexandria. As permitted by the City Code, the Commission will provide more detailed information as to the specific basis for, and the facts and circumstances supporting, its decision, when it issues its written decision within the next 30 days.

The Commission conducted a public hearing on this claim on July 27, 2005. Prior to the hearing, the Office of Human Rights investigated the allegations and found reasonable cause to believe discrimination had occurred. The Office's attempts to conciliate the Complainant's claims against Long & Foster were unsuccessful.

For further information, contact Jean Kelleher Niebauer, Director, Alexandria Office of Human Rights, at 703.926.6383.
