City of Alexandria Conducts Stream Assessment
Effort Will Help Prioritize Restoration Projects

The City of Alexandria has begun a stream assessment effort designed to identify those streams in most need of protection and restoration. The assessment, which began on July 20, is part of the City’s work to meet the goals of the Chesapeake Bay Protection Act.

“We want to maximize the value of streams as environmental assets to Alexandria’s residents, businesses, and visitors,” said Watershed Program Administrator Dr. Claudia Hamblin-Katnik. “This effort will help us understand the health of our streams and will be instrumental in guiding us to prioritize restoration and infrastructure repair projects.”

The assessment will be conducted by CH2M HILL, an environmental services firm under contract with the City’s Division of Environmental Quality. Workers will walk down the length of each stream in the City to observe and record stream characteristics, aquatic habitat, manmade infrastructure, form and surface features, and the condition of stream banks. Walks will consist of teams of two or three individuals, who will carry letters of introduction to verify their professional status. Workers will walk in the water and along the banks.
