Alexandria Human Rights Commission Schedules Public Hearing
On Cummings v. Long & Foster Real Estate Inc.

The Alexandria Human Rights Commission will hold a public hearing in the matter of Cummings v. Long & Foster Real Estate Inc. The public hearing will take place at 5 pm on Wednesday, July 27, at City Hall, 301 King St., Room 2000. The Complainant alleged discrimination based on sexual orientation and marital status, in violation of Section 12-4-4 of the City Code, which prohibits discrimination in housing. The Alexandria Office of Human Rights investigated the allegations and found reasonable cause to believe discrimination had occurred. The Complainant’s claim against Long & Foster could not be conciliated.

The Alexandria City Council created the Human Rights Commission in 1975 to advise Council members on matters related to human rights affecting the City and to oversee the Office of Human Rights. The Office of Human Rights enforces the Alexandria Human Rights Code, which precludes discrimination based on age, race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, gender, sexual orientation, familial status, or disability.

For more information on the public hearing, call Jean Niebauer, Director of the City’s Office of Human Rights, at 703.838.6390.
