New Exhibit Explores Alexandria’s Commercial Life A new exhibit at the Lyceum, Alexandria’s history museum, is exploring commercial life in the City beginning in the 1740s. “Open for Business: Commerce and Industry in Old Alexandria” will be on display at the museum, 201 S. Washington St., now through Monday, Sept. 26. “Open for Business: Commerce and Industry in Old Alexandria” uses a variety of photographic and archival resources that were compiled by historian James M. Goode and his student assistants. The exhibit examines the stores, manufacturing enterprises, banks, theaters, and other businesses that were the lifeblood of the community before World War II. The exhibit also helps mark the coming centennial of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce in 2006. The Lyceum is open Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and Sundays, 1 pm to 5 pm. The museum's admission and parking are free to the public. For additional information on the exhibit, call the Lyceum at 703.838.4994. ### |
