City of Alexandria Storm Sewer Relief Project Gets Underway

The City of Alexandria’s major capital improvement project, known as the Tanyard Ditch Storm Sewer Flood Relief Project, is underway. The project, located along Gibbon Street from Pitt Street to the Potomac River, is designed to alleviate the periodic flooding that occurs at the intersection of Pitt and Gibbon streets during significant, intense rainstorms.

The City launched the project after years of planning and working with community members to find out the most effective way to control recurrent flooding. The final plans for the project were contracted out in February.

The project involves the installation of a separate storm sewer to collect storm water entering the Gibbon and Pitt streets intersection and the storm water inlets along Gibbon Street. The construction includes relocation of the existing combined sewer, known as the Tanyard Ditch, to make room for a new storm sewer. The projected cost of the project is $4.88 million and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2006.

For more information on the project, call the City’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services at 703.838.4966.
