City of Alexandria’s Adopt-A-Block Program Helps Keep City Clean

The City of Alexandria’s Adopt-A-Block program offers established businesses, government entities, public organizations, and communities the opportunity to partner with the City and help maintain litter-free neighborhoods and streets. All participants must be at least 8 years old, and anyone under the age of 17 must have adult supervision.

The City’s Adopt-A-Block program was established in 2003 and is modeled after the Virginia Adopt-A-Block Highway Program, which was introduced in 1988 by the Virginia Department of Transportation to “Keep Virginia Beautiful.”

Interested groups volunteer to adopt a five-block section of roadway for two years and conduct litter collection at least four times a year. The City provides clean-up supplies such as bags, gloves, and safety vests, as well as pick-up of all trash collected. A sign will be placed on the adopted roadway section after the first litter collection, recognizing the efforts of the group.

For more information about the Adopt-A-Block program, call the City’s Solid Waste Division at 703.751.5130.
