Alexandria City Council Authorizes Application
For 2005 Technology Program Grant
Grant Would Provide $394,000 for Local
Community Policing and Crime Prevention Efforts

The Alexandria City Council has authorized an application for a 2005 Technology Program Grant for equipment for the City’s Police Department. The proposed grant will be submitted under the
U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). City Council approved the grant application for a total of $394,000 for one year, which does not require the City to match funds. The grant is restricted to one-time equipment purchases and cannot be used for staffing or overtime.

“This grant will assist with Alexandria’s ongoing efforts to advance community policing and improve crime prevention,” said Mayor William D. Euille.

Some of the proposed plans for the grant include purchasing 10 mobile computers and software to replace damaged or broken units and maintain continuity in field operations; cellular phone tracking equipment to precisely locate a cellular user if the phone number is known; and mobile vision in-car cameras to record patrol officers’ interactions with persons suspected of an offense.

The COPS Technology Program Grant provides funding for the continued development of technologies and automated systems that help tribal, state, and local law enforcement agencies prevent, respond to, and investigate crime. The funding allows law enforcement agencies to purchase technologies to advance communications interoperability, information sharing, crime analysis, intelligence gathering, and crime prevention in their communities.
