Performing Arts Summer Camps
Scheduled at Alexandria’s Durant Center

Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities is sponsoring two new Performing Arts Summer Camps at the Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center located at 1605 Cameron St., Alexandria.

Jazz Ensemble Camp
Calling all aspiring jazz musicians -- Come study one of America's original art forms in the setting of a jazz ensemble workshop. Students will study chords and scale concepts; and develop melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic vocabulary in the jazz idiom. Enjoy learning to play the 12-bar blues and the fundamentals of many jazz standards. Students must provide their own instruments. Drums, keyboards, and amplifiers are provided. Space is limited and the registration deadline is June 17.

When: July 5 - Aug. 11 (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays)
Where: Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center
Time: 3 - 5 pm
Fee: $150

Ballet Summer Camp

Kinder Ballet
Kinder Ballet is based on creative group experiences for girls and boys ages 2-5. The camp includes training in elementary ballet positions and modern dance techniques geared to the physical levels of the students. Camp attire: comfortable clothing, leotards and slippers. Registration is open until full.

When: June 27 - Sept. 1 (Mondays and Thursdays, no camp July 4 and Aug. 11)
Where: Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center, 1605 Cameron St.
Time: 9:30 - 10:30 am
Fee: $100 - Two days per week (18 sessions)
$50 - One day per week (9 sessions)

Ballet I
Ballet I is an introduction for girls and boys ages 6-12. This class is designed to encourage a new and wonderful experience with ballet. The class provides diversified experiences in various techniques of ballet and enhancing language development through ballet terminology and emphasizing poise and graceful movements. Camp attire: comfortable clothing, leotards and slippers. Registration is open until full.

When: June 27 - Sept. 1 (Monday and Thursday and no camp July 4 and Aug. 11)
Where: Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center, 1605 Cameron St.
Time: 10:30 - 11:30 am
Fee: $100 - Two days per week (18 sessions)
$50 - One day per week (9 sessions)
