Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities Seeks Nominations
For Awards Honoring Local Residents and Organizations


The Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities is seeking nominations for three annual awards that honor local residents and organizations. Nominations for the awards must be postmarked by Saturday, April 30, and mailed to: Debbie Ludington, Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities, Department of Human Services, Office of Aging an Adult Services, 2525 Mt. Vernon Ave., Alexandria, VA 22301.

The John Duty Collins III Outstanding Advocate Award recognizes an individual who has advocated for persons with disabilities and includes a $500 donation in the recipient's name to an organization of the recipient's choice that contributes to the promotion of equal opportunity for persons with disabilities; the Community Organization Grant Award provides up to $1,000 in assistance to a non-profit agency in the City for its efforts to remove barriers and extend services to Alexandria residents with a disability; and the Gerry Bertier Scholarship awards a $1500 merit based scholarship to a resident with a disability who seeks post-secondary education.

A prerequisite to receive these awards is that award recipients are required to attend the annual reception of the Alexandria Commission On Persons With Disabilities that is held with the Mayor and City Council planned for 6 pm in the Vola Lawson Room of City Hall on Tuesday, June 14.
