Several Dog Parks Are Located Throughout Alexandria

The City of Alexandria provides dog exercise areas and fenced dog parks for the convenience and enjoyment of area dog owners. Off-leash dog parks are an important part of the City’s park system. Off-leash parks have designated areas for dogs and their owners to exercise and recreate without disrupting other uses of the parks. For those looking for room to roam, but without a complete open area, the City provides several fenced dog parks. The location of Alexandria’s dog parks are as follows:

Fenced Dog Parks:

- Simpson Stadium Park at Monroe Avenue
- 5000 block of Duke Street east, of the Charles E. Beatley Jr. Library
- Montgomery Park at the corner of Fairfax Street and First Street
- Ben Brenman Park by Backlick Creek

Unfenced Dog Exercise Areas:

- Founders Park at Oronoco Street and Union Street
- Windmill Hill Park at Gibbon Street and Union Street
- Southeast corner of Braddock Road and Commonwealth Avenue
- Hooff’s Run, east of Commonwealth Avenue between Oak Street and Chapman Street
- Area between Ft. Williams and New Ft. Williams Parkway
- Along Old Mill Run, west of Gordon Street (Tarleton Park)
- West side of Fort Ward Park
- Along Chambliss Street, south of tennis courts (Chambliss Street Park)
- Median to Timberbranch Parkway between Braddock Road and Oakley Place
- Chinquapin Park, east of loop
- East entrance to Monticello Park
- Edison Street cul-de-sac (Four Mile Run Park)
- W&OD Railroad at Raymond Avenue
There are rules posted at the dog parks, but a few that dog owners should be aware of are:

- Only dogs that are 4 months and older are allowed in the parks

- Dogs must be legally licensed, vaccinated, and wearing current tags

- Dog owners or handlers must keep their dogs in view at all times
- Any bite of a person or other dog must be immediately reported to Alexandria Animal Control and all parties involved must wait for an officer to respond, except in the case where immediate medical care is needed
- Dogs must not be allowed to bark incessantly or to the annoyance of the neighborhood
- Dog owners or handlers must immediately pick up and dispose all dog feces in trash receptacles
- Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult when inside a fenced dog park
