City of Alexandria Hosts Work Group Meeting On Jones Point Park Concept Plans The City of Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, Department of Transportation & Environmental Services, and Office of Historic Alexandria will host a Work Group meeting to discuss the Jones Point Park Concept Plans at 7 pm on Thursday, May 26, at the Mt. Vernon Elementary School, 2601 Commonwealth Ave. During the meeting, Work Group representatives will discuss the proposed alternative concepts and finalize the Work Group’s recommendations on the park concept plans. The Work Group will receive comments related to the Alternative Concept Plans for park renovation and redesign during the first portion of the meeting. The Alexandria City Council adopted the original plan for the park’s renovation and design in December of 2000 after receiving extensive community input. Jones Point Park is located in the southeast section of the City and fronts the Potomac River. The park was scheduled for renovation after the completion of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project. The plan for the park has been under review to address federal and state public safety concerns that require the removal of planned parking under the proposed bridge structure following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Alternative Concept Plans under review include open space, recreation, and historic uses of the park once the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project is completed. The Work Group’s recommendations on the Alternative Concept Plans will be forwarded to City Council for consideration in June. The Work Group includes representatives of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Neighborhood Task Force Subcommittee, Park and Recreation Commission, Environmental Policy Commission, Youth Sports Advisory Committee, Archaeology Commission, Historic Alexandria Resource Commission, Jones Point Park Stakeholders Group, and the National Park Service.
