Alexandria Proclaims May As Watershed Awareness Month

The Alexandria City Council will proclaim May as Watershed Awareness Month during its Council meeting on Tuesday, May 10, in a joint effort between the City, Arlington County, and the City of Falls Church to formally recognize various local water quality initiatives. One of those initiatives involves reducing the amount of trash and debris in streams by educating the public that nothing except storm water should be released into a storm drain.

In addition, Alexandria will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of all perennial and natural intermittent streams, which will form the basis for prioritizing stream restoration and stream bank stabilization projects in the City.

Council’s announcement will be preceded by the 2005 Spring Holmes Run Park Clean-Up event on Saturday, May 7, from 10 am to 1 pm at North Pickett Street and Holmes Run Parkway.

For more information on the Spring Holmes Run Park Clean-Up, call Mary Zoeter at 703.461.3283.
