Pedestrian Fatally Injured in Crash
An 87-year-old Alexandria woman was struck and killed as she was crossing Taney Avenue today.
Investigation revealed that the victim, Jung Hee Yoon, was in the 4500 block of Taney Avenue near North Jordan Street when the accident occurred at 12:06 p.m. She was crossing the street when she was struck by a truck as it pulled away from the curb.
The truck driver, a 43-year-old Burke man, was driving a Freightliner-Utilimaster box truck. He remained on the scene. The victim was transported to Inova Alexandria Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and has begun its investigation. Taney Avenue traffic in both directions has been diverted around the accident scene while officers complete their investigation.
The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk. No charges have been placed at this time.
This is the second traffic fatality in Alexandria in 2005.
