Location Changed for Jones Point Park Public Hearing

The location has changed for the upcoming public hearing scheduled by the Jones Point Park Work Group for Wednesday, May 4, to receive comments related to Alternative Concept Plans for park renovation and redesign for Jones Point Park. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 7 pm at the George Washington Middle School Cafeteria, 1005 Mt. Vernon Ave., Alexandria.

The original plan for the park renovation and redesign was adopted by the Alexandria City Council in December 2000 after extensive community input. Jones Point Park is located in the southeast part of the City and fronts the Potomac River. The park was scheduled for renovation after the completion of the Wilson Bridge Project

The plan for the park is being reviewed again to address federal and state public safety concerns following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks which required the removal of planned parking under the proposed bridge structure. Alternative concept plans under review include open space, recreation, and historic uses once the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project is completed.

Following the public hearing, the Work Group’s recommendations on the Alternative Concept Plans will be forwarded to City Council for consideration in June.

The Work Group includes representatives of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Neighborhood Task Force Subcommittee, Park and Recreation Commission, Environmental Policy Commission, Youth Sports Advisory Committee, Archaeology Commission, Historic Alexandria Resource Commission, Jones Point Park Stakeholders Group and the National Park Service.

For further information, call Aimee Vosper of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities at 703.838.5041.
