Police Investigating Hostage Taking in Alexandria

Alexandria police are on the scene of a domestic-related hostage-barricade situation in the unit block of West Wyatt Avenue in Del Ray.

Today, at 8:30 p.m., a 48-year-old Alexandria man abducted his 9-year-old son at gunpoint as the boy and the boy’s mother, 45, were leaving a restaurant in the 1300 block of King Street. Police believe that the suspect took the boy to his home on West Wyatt Avenue and is now holding him hostage.

It is not yet known if anyone has been injured.

The suspect and his wife are currently separated, and there is a protective order prohibiting the suspect from having contact with his wife and son.

Members of the Hostage Negotiation Team and the Special Operations Team are also on the scene.

Approximately a dozen homes in the immediate area have been evacuated as a safety precaution. Those residents are being offered shelter at the Mount Vernon Elementary School at 2601Commonwealth Avenue.
