Alexandria Recognizes National Foster Care Awareness Month

The City of Alexandria is recognizing May as national Foster Care Awareness Month by holding an informational session for the public on Saturday, May 21, from 10 am to noon. The event will take place at the Beatley Library, 5005 Duke St. During the session, present foster care parents and City social workers will share information with individuals on how they can become foster care or adoptive parents.

Alexandria has over 200 children in foster care, which represents a 30 percent increase since 2002. The City needs homes within the City limits whose residents are willing to take infants and toddlers, teens, pregnant teenage girls, and girls with infants. A monthly stipend helps to cover the child’s expenses, and Medicaid provides health care. Foster care parents may be married or single and can be homeowners or renters. Persons who are bilingual in English and Spanish are needed.

For more information, call Karen Chaudhry of the City’s Department of Human Services at 703.838.0891.
