Pedestrian Fatally Injured in Crash

A 52-year-old Alexandria man was crossing Duke Street this morning with his dog when they were both struck by a car and killed.

Investigation revealed that victim, Michael Finucan, who lived nearby, was walking his dog and crossing Duke Street in the 3800 block near Donelson Street when the accident occurred at 6:20 a.m. The pedestrian was walking from the north side of the street with his dog and had crossed the westbound lanes. As they continued south into the eastbound lanes, they were both struck.

The motorist, an 18-year-old Springfield woman, was driving a 1995 red Jeep Grand Cherokee. The woman and another motorist traveling in the same direction immediately stopped after the accident. The victim was transported to Inova Alexandria Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and have begun their investigation. Duke Street traffic in both directions has been diverted around the accident scene while officers complete their investigation.

The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk. No charges have been placed at this time.

This is the first traffic fatality in Alexandria in 2005.
