City of Alexandria Sponsors Town Meeting on Parent Leadership Training
Leadership Institute Graduates and Trainers Will Address Community

Councilwoman Joyce Woodson and the Alexandria City Council, the City Public Schools and the City’s Department of Human Services have organized a town meeting for April 29, 6 pm, at Minnie Howard School, to discuss the Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI), developed in Connecticut. This unique institute helps parents learn civic, social and academic engagement.

The PLTI is a 20-week civics program (one night each week) that will help parents become leaders for their children, family, and community; expand the capacity of parents to be agents of change for children; develop communities of parents to support one another in skill development and successful action; increase parent-child interaction and improve child outcomes through parent involvement.

The goal of the town meeting is to give the Alexandria community an opportunity to hear directly from the PLTI organizers and participants from Connecticut and to decide collectively whether this program could be replicated in the City of Alexandria.

“I think it is time we helped parents become empowered,” stated Councilwoman Joyce Woodson, who is leading the effort to bring the program to Alexandria. “When I first heard Elaine Zimmerman present this program at the National League of Cities, I knew that it would work in our community.”

Minnie Howard School is located at 3801 W. Braddock Road. Food and childcare will be provided as well as transportation if needed. Please call Fay in Councilwoman Woodson’s office at 703-838-4500 for reservations and more information.
