City of Alexandria Holds Tsunami Relief Fund Campaign

While the public has responded generously to the emergency needs of the South East Asian countries affected by the tsunami, there is a need for ongoing funding to support reconstruction of housing and infrastructure. In support of this need for funding, the Alexandria City Council authorized a two-month fund-raising effort, ending April 30, 2005, with donations to be dedicated to supporting the work of Shelter for Life (SFL), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The City’s goal is to raise $20,000.

Funds contributed to SFL from this initiative may be used for temporary shelters (each estimated to cost $400), permanent housing (each estimated to cost $1,500), or delivery of water and emergency kits to affected families.

Shelter for Life, www.shelter.org, specializes in emergency and permanent housing for refugees, internally displaced persons, and disaster victims. The agency is an implementing partner of the United Nations and the U.S. State Department, and is registered as a Private Voluntary Organization with the USAID.

Tax deductible donations may be made online by eChecks at alexandriava.gov or by mailing a check, payable to “City of Alexandria-Tsunami Relief Project,” to the Department of Finance, 301 King St., Room 1600, Alexandria, VA 22314.
