All Sports Facility for Alexandria
Is Topic of April 21 Public Hearing
With Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission

A proposal for an All City Sports Facility in the City of Alexandria will be the topic of a public hearing before the Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission on Thursday, April 21, at 7 pm at Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson St. The City Council was presented with a feasibility study on March 22 for a state-of-the-art lighted multi-use sports complex to provide a venue for high school athletics, including night football as well as other competitive and recreational sporting events such as baseball, softball, field hockey, soccer, track and field and lacrosse. The public hearing will seek public input on programming and construction of a Sports Facility at Hensley Park on Eisenhower Avenue. The Commission is expected to report back to the City Council in May or June.

The idea for an All City Sports Facility came from a group called Alexandrians for an All-City Sports Facility which formed to help address the possibility of building a substantial sports facility that could return night-time football to T.C. Williams High School, and the City. In December 2003 the City Council directed staff to investigate potential sites for such a facility on City-owned land. Out of four sites considered, it was determined that Hensley Park was the most suitable site for a multi-use All City Sports Facility.

“The quality of life is measured in part by recreational, cultural and educational opportunities,” said Mayor William D. Euille. “I am very supportive of the concept of an All City Sports Facility because of the benefits it would generate for all ages of Alexandrians,” he said.
